Wynwood Walls opened in 2009 with 12 original murals in a declining garment and warehouse district, helping turn it into an internationally visible mural zone as rapid gentrification followed. Seven new international artists joined the 2011 Art Basel edition, including Vhils, who cut paired, unidentified portraits into a wall. Their emergence from an abandoned industrial skin mirrors the district's remaking and the new artistic and real-estate value drawn from it.
