Mural Arts Program — Walls work, 2013, Philadelphia, United States

At 1225 Spruce Street in Philadelphia, Vhils built a large-scale wheatpaste piece from archival photographs of the city, made with Mural Arts Philadelphia in 2013. No carving was involved: layers of historical imagery are cut and torn away to let fragments of the city's visual memory surface within the composition. The work extends Vhils' exploration of urban archaeology beyond architecture, treating photographic archives as another material for excavation.
