The sea is the organising principle of Marulho. Installed in the Monte Palace Tropical Garden in Funchal, Madeira, and presented in October 2025, the work responds to an island whose history, ecology and cultural identity have long been shaped by the Atlantic. Produced in collaboration with the historic Viúva Lamego manufactory, the monumental panel is composed of 1,575 glazed ceramic tiles whose relief and varied ultramarine glazes transform the traditional azulejo into a sculptural surface. Vhils works through the material depth of the ceramic, letting the portrait emerge from the interplay of light, shadow and texture. Surrounded by the island's endemic vegetation, the installation establishes a dialogue between land and sea, craftsmanship and contemporary experimentation, extending the artist's engagement with Portuguese material traditions while opening them to new spatial and environmental contexts.
