Amália Rodrigues (Calçada) — Tiles work, 2015, Lisbon, Portugal

On Rua de São Tomé, in Alfama, this portrait of Amália Rodrigues was built in 2015 by Lisbon's master calceteiros, stone by stone, in calçada portuguesa — the paving craft that has shaped the city's public spaces for generations. Vhils translates his visual language into that craft's own technique here, without the carving that marks most of his work. The result pairs a national cultural icon with a traditional urban trade, honouring Amália's legacy alongside the anonymous artisans whose labour continues to define Lisbon's identity.
