Before its conversion into a luxury hotel, Les Bains-Douches at 7 Rue du Bourg l'Abbé, Paris, opened one final time as a temporary space for contemporary art. Curated by Magda Danysz, the 2013 residency invited around thirty artists to intervene freely across the roughly 3,000 m² former nightclub ahead of its renovation. Vhils carved into the wall of the former dance floor, exposing decades of accumulated material within the surface itself. The building had already lived as private baths, a nightclub and a cultural landmark; the carving became one more layer in that succession. It disappeared during the subsequent redevelopment, in keeping with the residency's premise that the work's significance lay in its dialogue with the site at a specific moment.
