Fondation Carmignac — Walls work, 2018, Île de Porquerolles, France

For the opening of Villa Carmignac on Porquerolles, this site-specific intervention, Scratching the Surface Porquerolles (2018), transforms the island's former gardener's cottage into an integral part of the exhibition itself. Vhils carved a monumental eye into the building's gable, while the remaining façades became home to portraits of local inhabitants whose lives are deeply connected to the island. The cottage is not a historical backdrop: the work reconnects it with the community that has shaped its identity, setting contemporary portraiture in a place where landscape, architecture and memory converge. The intervention forms part of the Fondation Carmignac's ambition to establish a lasting dialogue between contemporary art and the island's cultural and natural heritage.
