The opening of Magda Danysz Gallery's new premises at 188 Linqing Road in 2012 provided Vhils with a base from which to examine Shanghai at a moment of accelerated redevelopment. Following a month of interventions across the city, the project brought the street and exhibition space into direct relation: carved walls were presented alongside works made from salvaged wood, corroded metal and layered paper, materials already marked by circulation, use and decay. The address was itself part of a proposed new cultural district, making the gallery's expansion inseparable from the wider processes reshaping the surrounding neighbourhood. Vhils worked through the physical evidence that urban change produced, drawing attention to what is displaced when buildings, objects and social environments are rapidly renewed.
