Visceral is a wall work created by Vhils in 2012 for the 18th Gallery in Shanghai. A portrait was carved into a derelict industrial wall, exposing brick and stripped plaster beneath through chiselling and controlled removal, surfacing an anonymous human face from a structure already marked for demolition. The work treats the city's urban transformation as both medium and subject. Additional photos: João Moreira, Vhils Studio.
