Tiles

Before working on his first pieces with glazed ceramic tiles – a body of work first presented at the “Fractal” solo exhibition in Seville in 2022 –, Vhils had been making use of patterns and other elements that evoke the particular language of Portuguese azulejos – which form an integral part of his native Lisbon’s urban visual culture – for many years in his works with advertising posters and other media.

Guided by his experimental-driven instincts, Vhils has since developed a series of innovative approaches to the use of the age-old medium, including the recourse to relief-creation techniques, stencil-applied pigment painting techniques, and drip-painting techniques. The employment of manual processes enables the creation of unique pieces, imbuing the use of industrial techniques with an organic-like quality.
