Refract Series #01

A frontal portrait emerges from a grid of cobalt-blue glazed ceramic tiles, the face revealed where Vhils has chiselled and abraded the glaze to expose the white clay beneath. The technique transposes his signature subtractive carving onto the Portuguese azulejo tradition, with fragments of ornamental tile pattern surfacing around the sitter.
