Five years after Hugo Oliveira first shared his album Home with Vhils — who was the very first person to hear it — the conversation between the two practices took physical form. Vhils carved a piano, excavating a face from its black surface, and the instrument became the matrix for a limited collector’s edition of Home, re-recorded at Abbey Road Studios: a vinyl record, a custom-designed label and a laser-etched outer box, each developed from the carved piano. Two ways of revealing what lies beneath the surface — one through sound, vibration and resonance; the other through excavation and the exposure of hidden layers — bound into a single artwork shaped by sound, matter and memory.
