Fragmentos

Fragmentos gathered work Vhils made in 2012 and 2013 in Morro da Providência and Ladeira dos Tabajaras, Rio de Janeiro, communities reshaped by redevelopment tied to the 2016 Olympic Games and the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which displaced long-established residents. The exhibition at the Clark Art Center did not simply document these interventions: it extended them into the gallery, staging a dialogue between works developed on site and new installations built for the space. Salvaged materials, carved surfaces and moving images kept a direct link to the neighbourhoods they came from, opening onto the social consequences of large-scale redevelopment — a step in the evolution of the Scratching the Surface project.
