At Aldeia de Araçaí, in Piraquara (Paraná), Brazil, the wooden architecture of the Guarani community was not treated as a neutral support, but as part of the social life the project sought to engage. Carved in March 2014 as part of a series depicting 18 community members, this portrait of resident Dona Emília belonged to a group of interventions made directly on the village's houses and doors, placing individual presence within the homes people actually lived in. The work should be distinguished from Incisão, the exhibition assembled from 54 collected doors and later presented at Caixa Cultural Curitiba (2014) and Brasília (2019): although both emerged from the same encounter, the carvings left in Araçaí remained bound to their original setting and to the material vulnerability of the buildings themselves. By working in situ, Vhils shifted portraiture away from representation alone, making it contingent on habitation, community and the uncertain duration of wood exposed to use and climate.
