Embassy of Portugal in Thailand — Walls work, 2017, Bangkok, Thailand

At the Embassy of Portugal in Bangkok, Vhils carved a panoramic composition of Thai faces centred on a magnified eye into a long white wall, completed in 2017 using his bas-relief subtractive technique. The carving is built into the embassy's own architecture, part of the building's role as a meeting point between Portugal and Thailand. Rather than a fixed national emblem, the portrait draws on movement between places, materials and identities to represent Portugal.
