Scratching the Surface project / The Mills
Hong Kong SAR, China
Two large-scale murals, one carved into the side elevation and the other on the rooftop terrace of the former Nan Fung Textiles Group cotton mill (currently home to The Mills cultural, business, and creativity hub) in Hong Kong, were part of a project developed in partnership with The Mills, The Mills Gallery, and the Hong Kong Contemporary Art (HOCA) Foundation.
The portraits were inspired by Vhils’ research into the textile industry of Hong Kong and its workers, with the purpose of helping preserve their memory and accentuate the importance of their contribution, often anonymous, to an industry that played a decisive role in developing the territory’s material and human economy.
