Incisão / CAIXA Cultural Brasília
Consisting of a large-scale installation with recourse to hand-carved old wooden doors, “Incisão” (incision, in English) had three iterations at different units of the CAIXA Cultural’s network of cultural centres in Brazil.
The body of works resulted from a short residency at the indigenous village of Araçaí, where a community of Guarani people live in very difficult conditions. Its aim was to raise public awareness to their situation, while developing a reflection on how these traditional communities are being left behind in the fast-paced race of modern development. From this interaction, Vhils presented an installation based on old wooden doors carved in collaboration with the community’s artisans, blending ancient and modern carving techniques.
Comprising 54 doors depicting faces and indigenous motifs, the project represents a collaboration between Vhils and the Guarani people.
