A monumental portrait of a smiling woman wearing a beaded necklace emerges from the whitewashed gable of a building in Praia, carved directly into the plaster through Vhils's signature subtractive technique of chiselling and chipping away the wall's surface layers. The exposed substrate and aggregate become the tonal range of the face, binding the sitter's likeness to the fabric of the Cape Verdean street.
