São João da Madeira / Portugal / 2013 — Walls work, 2013, São João da Madeira, Portugal

At the entrance to the former Oliva metalworks, on Rua da Fundição in São João da Madeira, Vhils was invited in January 2013 to intervene as the site was being converted into the Oliva Creative Factory. Working from archival photographs, he carved five murals with a jackhammer directly into the foundry's weathered walls: the company's mid-century advertising figure "Miss Oliva," portraits of former metalworkers, and the silhouettes of children, staging a dialogue between industrial memory, corporate imagery and the site's new creative use. The murals were designed to keep changing with the building itself; weathering and vandalism have since erased them, part of Scratching the Surface's understanding that memory stays tied to the life of the place that carries it.
