EDP Art Reef

EDP Art Reef is a unique underwater permanent exhibition created by Vhils together with Portuguese electric utilities company EDP that will create a new coral reef using repurposed parts from deactivated coal-fired power plants.
Comprising 13 large-scale pieces, it is located in the Atlantic Ocean, one nautical mile off the coast of Albufeira, in the southern Portuguese region of the Algarve, at a depth of between 10 and 15 metres. This underwater exhibition can be visited by divers with the appropriate certification. The works will only be complete when nature does its part and transforms them into an ecosystem for marine life.
Conceived to exercise a positive and sustainable impact, EDP Art Reef goes beyond creating a contemplative moment for divers, enhancing the transformative and beneficial potential of its placement on the seabed by contributing to the development of its surrounding natural ecosystem.
