Portrait (Diplo)

Portrait of the American DJ and producer Diplo (Thomas Wesley Pentz), carved from an accumulated mass of advertising posters whose whitewashed top layer is progressively cut and torn away to reveal the face within the printed strata beneath, fragments of poster text and numerals remaining legible across the features. The studio archive documents the work in four progressive carving states — from the blank whitewashed poster mass to the finished portrait — recorded across six chromatic variations. It belongs to a 2022 group of carved-poster portraits of music and art-world figures documented in the same numbered-state format, alongside portraits of Steve Aoki, David Grutman, Dillon Francis, JR and Madonna.
