Untitled (Early Billboard) — Billboards work, 2009

An early billboard work built from accumulated layers of advertising posters, torn and cut back through white overpainting. A pale figure emerges at the centre against a dark, stippled poster ground, with a carved eye at the right edge and an inverted dark-red poster band with white lettering at the lower right; runs of white paint and blue spatter track down the strata, with brick-patterned and photographic poster fragments legible in the debris. The artist places it among his early works from the Lazarides period — around the time of his first show with the gallery (Scratching the Surface, Lazarides Gallery, London, 2009) — or even before. Published by the artist in the Billboards section of his Cargo Collective portfolio.
