NizzArt — Walls work, 2013, Turin, Italy

In November 2013, Vhils carved a monumental portrait into the façade of the residential building at Via Nizza 50, in Turin's San Salvario district, for NizzArt — a project turning Via Nizza into an open-air route for contemporary art through collaborations between local institutions, residents and international artists. The figure was based on a photograph Vhils took of an anonymous person during a journey through Mexico. Part of Scratching the Surface, the piece treats the building's layered façade as an archive of lived experience, exposing what is already there. Photo credit: Davide Fasolo.
