Carris – Arte em Movimento

In 2010, Vhils installed the portrait Espectro at the Ascensor da Bica funicular, Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo, Lisbon, for Carris's Arte em Movimento programme, which invited contemporary artists to intervene across the city's transport network. The commission extended Scratching the Surface to a temporary urban infrastructure instead of a permanent building, acknowledging the transitory nature of the site itself. The installation no longer survives. It anticipated a direction that grew more central to his practice: working with public institutions to place art inside the civic systems people use every day.
