Latent was the first solo exhibition by Alexandre Farto aka VHILS in Mallorca and marked the beginning of his collaboration with Baró Galeria. It opened on the occasion of the 30th edition of Nit de l'Art. The exhibition occupied the gallery's two main spaces and brought together works from several ongoing series. The title refers to an optical phenomenon that takes place twice a year inside Palma Cathedral. As the morning light passes through the great rose window, it projects the image of a second rose window onto the opposite wall. For a few minutes the building reveals an image of itself. Nothing is added; what was always there simply becomes visible. The same logic underlies Vhils' process: "I normally begin with an existing surface and remove, cut or break through its layers until something that was dormant becomes visible." The exhibition gathered carved doors, billboards, ceramic tile panels and architectural debris, tracing the artist's long engagement with architecture, material and memory. Doors salvaged from abandoned buildings became faces. Billboards, once carriers of advertising, were cut and torn until they read like archaeological sites. Tile panels drew on a tradition shared by Portugal and Mallorca, turning an architectural material into portraiture. Fragments of demolished buildings were given a human presence once more. The exhibition was accompanied by a critical essay by curator and writer Enrique Juncosa.
